We have a large number of Hostas on the edge of the natural stream in the woodland garden. The oriental area has bridges, Acers, ponds and gravel. Malcolm has a weekness for Sorbus. His collection now numbers 43 and we are now vying for space in the garden!

| Lisselan Gardens, Clonakilty |

Lisselan Gardens were laid out in Robinsonian style from the early 1850s. William Bence-Jones chose a site on a promontory above the river for a French chateau style house designed by Lewis Vuliamy. The Bence-Jones family created 30 acres of gardens which take advantage of the natural features and contours provided by the valley and the Argideen river running through it.

The garden is owned by Christine & Les Wilson. They bought the old ' cottage and acre ' in 1990 as a holiday home. There was no garden, just a grass field . Convinced that they would never leave England to live in Ireland, they planted the whole acre field in 1996 with about 350 mixed trees and large shrubs. But they sold up in England and moved here the next year in 1997.

The garden is very close to the water, in fact the entire garden is within thirty metres of the Atlantic Ocean. They are lucky in that, the part of the Atlantic that touches them has, as it's main feature, the Gulf Stream. This keeps the climate temperate, so that many plants which would not normally grow in this latitude, do very well here.
